Crime Prevention

One of the most important aspects of police work is crime prevention. Pro-active crime prevention programs are a key focus of the Western Springs Police Department. We offer numerous programs and services to benefit the citizens and businesses of Western Springs. These programs and services include:

Educational Talks
The department will meet with senior groups, community organizations, clubs and neighborhood groups to discuss fraud and confidence crimes, elder abuse, identity theft, home and street safety and other related topics.

Residential and Commercial Security Surveys
The Crime Prevention officer will visit your home or business and evaluate your need for additional security.

Night Watch Program
Patrol officers conduct a security check of random businesses on a daily basis. When the department finds a door to a business open after normal business hours, a Business Crime Prevention Letter is sent to the business owner providing them with practical crime prevention tips to combat criminal activity such as theft, fraud, robberies and mischief.

Home Security Door Hangers Program
Patrol officers conduct a security check of random residences. If you receive a form on your door, it does not mean there is any problem in your area. Our officers are asked to leave them in their patrol area. It is a courtesy service we do to point out any deficiencies that may exist.

Stop Car Burglaries
Vehicle owners are informed of the vulnerability of losing personal property that is in sight in their vehicle and to offer remedies to help safeguard them from becoming crime victims.

Vacation Check Request
Residents may notify the department that they will be out of town and provides the department with contact information should officers observe a problem at the residence. The form may be filled out at the Police Department or online.

Station Tours
Station tours are available to any interested groups and can be adapted to the age and interests of each group.

911 Cell Phone Bank
This is a nationwide program designed to maximize community cell phone donations. By donating your retired cell phone, you provide emergency communication to someone in need. Donate your old cell phone today.

National Night Out
This event occurs annually on the first Tuesday of August in Spring Rock Park. It is designed to: heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
