The Criminal Investigation Division of the Western Springs Police Department is responsible for the investigation of reported and non-reported criminal activity within the Village. These investigations include interviews of complainants, witnesses, and suspects. The Village's Police Department's Investigation unit is comprised of a Sergeant and two investigators. Offenses range from criminal sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault/battery, burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft. As shown in the table below, the vast majority of crimes reported in the Village are property crimes such as burglary and theft. The unit also has the responsibility of gathering and documenting physical crime scene evidence. The Investigation Division is also responsible for the processing of all evidence and property collected. The evidence is collected and then stored until used in a court proceeding and released or ordered to be destroyed by the court system.
The goal of the Criminal Investigation Division is to investigate, identify, and criminally prosecute those who violate the municipal, state and federal codes.
